The art deco State Theatre was built in 1934 and is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. After decades as a film house, the State was converted into a community arts center and concert hall. In June 2005, the new nonprofit State Theatre of Modesto, Inc. was created and spearheaded a complete makeover. Local designer Michelle Lacy led a team that lovingly restored the State’s interior and exterior. In the years since, a state-of-the-art sound system and digital technology were added and customer services expanded. For the first time since its opening, the State Theatre has been transformed into a fully comprehensive film going palace. It is a downtown treasure.
